B181 – PLEASE LET ME SLEEP

For the past months I’ve been properly excited to have a Sunday, and today that’s what I had. For some reason Amy and me woke up at like 6:30 this morning and decided we should head over to Cambridge road flower market first thing and grab some more plants for the flat, the plan is to basically have like an indoor balcony. We don’t have an outside bit so doing the best we can with the extra big window ledge.

I’m telling you now it’s coming along nicely, I’m not going to post any pictures because I want to reveal the thing look once it’s done m, which will hopefully be soon. I’ve got my eye on a few things that will finish it off. Anyone after getting hold of a pine apple plant and some other planets I’m not sure what they are but we headed back to the flat and make a plan to head over to Epping forest.

Who knew that Epping forest was actually anywhere near Epping tube station, I just imagined it would be like the new forest and you can just get off the train anywhere and be surround by country side. That was definitely not the case and the only answer was the head into a local pub for the good old English pub grub, no alcohol though just a pint of orange juice.

We basically just looked around Epping and headed back to London to grab some supplies for the flat, I have good news. As of tomorrow the flat will now have blinds, I’ve been here for 3 yeas now and finally blinds are going to be installed! It’s been a long wait, but it’s happening and I can’t wait.

I suppose this is a proper Sunday post, nothing to extreme just a chilled day out, on the other hand I can’t sleep through the night and keep waking up at like 2ish for a few hours I’m pretty sure it’s the jet lag and it’s happened to be again now, it’s 2:37 on Monday morning a few hours ago I was passed out now I’m wake awake! Does anyone have any tips to get back to normal, I love sleep and really want a full nights sleep.

B180 – 6 MONTHS LATER

right, its happened. Ive left my camera at a party last night so all the photos I took yesterday are at my mates house. meaning that not only have I woken up with a rough head but Ive got no pictures from yesterday and haven’t got my camera for today. the plan now is to scroll back through some old photos and have a little reminiscing.

We are now two days away from the 6 month mark and to be honest I’m pretty happy with how its gone, when I first set out on this I had a target of getting a thousand views a month for the first 6 months and I can now say that we have reach 6,497 views in the first half of this blog. the target has been smashed, so thank you.

this whole photo challenge is not the easiest thing in the world and is taking a lot of energy to post every day and write something but I cant believe how much its helped my writing, which I think has got better. 6 months ago my every day writing was terrible from spelling mistake in emails that shouldn’t have mistakes to writing instructions for other people that just didn’t make sense. Now I feel a lot more confident I’m what I write and feel like I can back it up. this whole thing has also helped me to understand more about camera’s, photography and lighting, I’m now thinking bigger and better and what to really push some ideas forward and get s**t done.

The photos I want to show today are from the first 50 days of this project. I’m not trying to show where Ive come from and to where I am now, because Im happy with the photos, I think if I was to look back at my photos and think what should I of done and what I didn’t do, then my brain would explode. The plan here is just to look back at some cool moments that otherwise would get lost in just the shear amount of content that i’m posting here. enjoy these photos.

B166 – COOL SIDE OF AMERICA – NIGHT TIME. MID WEST. P2

this is the first day of my mini project Cool side of Unknown America inside of the 3 photos a day project. the plan is to show the of the tourist trail america, just the suburbs and where locals go and what day to day life is like. for my first day I wanted to show night time in St. charles. this historic town dates back to 1796 and if your ever round here you have to try the toasted ravioli on main street. I think I mentioned it yesterday, but this stuff is worth checking out.

On the way back to the hotel from location today, there was a sign that apparently ready “Cool stuff, cheap”. well as my first photo project is called cool side of unknown america, it was only right I waited for it to get dark and  then go take some snaps of it to open this project up properly! thank you Libby for pointing that sign out!

I wanted my first shoot to be a night time one, I think photography at night is not the easiest thing, but when the light hits a certain focual point it really opens the photo up, it creates some sort of mystery to the rest of the image and tells a story in its self. when you take away all the light and only have a small outline of a object or person in the for ground and then something lite up at the back of the shot. for me it adds a whole new dimension. that was my thinking tonight, give you guys something to look at a few times and notice something else, maybe something that I havent even seen. a lot of the time, I just take a photo by accident and the somehow that turns out to be one of my favourite. for these photos Ive got the ISO pretty high, because I need it for light but I also like the grainy look it gives these photos especially because they are black and white.

I would love to hear what people think of these photos, I might just be a bit delirious after work and none of this make sense and for that I’m sorry!

Heres my snaps, enjoy.

B161 – Downtown

this morning a lot of time was spent filming down town, which meant we got to see what life is like in proper Downtown. and to be honest on a Sunday its pretty quite. aperently Goldboro is in the Bible belt, which means strict religious rules, like church on Sundays, no alcohol and all shops are shut. That basically meant we had the town to ourselfs, which was actaully pretty weird, the only other people there were the curious locals watching us, or the one lady who came up and asked “what is that?” while pointing to the camera…

North Carolina has been a tough few days and tomorrow we leave for the next destination, im looking forward to eating some organic food. its tough eating processed food all the time. one question I have for anyone reading this for the south, why are you using polystyrene plates and cutlery to eat? that stuff is bad for the environment and must cost you a fortune! some people east every meal off of polystyrene? why?

I dont want to moan but that is a crazy amount of extra waste, just use china like the rest of us and wash up after. trust me its not that much more time consuming and means you can re-use your plates. I will happily send anyone a link to cheap cutlery if you need help finding it. 70 polystyrene plates are $18, now that will last 2 people a month, or you could by 6 china plates for $30 and they will easily last you a year. and thats 3 each.

on a lighter topic, today I saw my first proper american motor cycle gang unspoken sons, at first they scared the hell out of people and one of them even looked like he was going to kill me or something, the president even introduced himself as Nasty, which didn’t make me to confident but after a quick google this evening I realised that they are actually a massive support of Children’s charities. so I think I’m pretty safe.

Heres my photos, hope you like them.

B150 – MY NEW TOY

After one stollen package and then one being delivered to the wrong flat, my new flash gun has arrived, its one of those ones that sits in the hot shoe on top of my camera, so naturally the photos tonight are of Amy and me, testing out the flash after dinner. its only the Amazon basic Flash, Ive been looking at getting on for a while now and the other day amazon had a sale on and were selling them for £20 with prime, so I thought it was time to see what these things are like.

and first things first, it was so easy to set this up, i have no idea about the technical side of it, but focusing in low light is so easy, im not sure if the flash, kind of works as an auto focus or what, up all the stills came out sharp. What is also really good about the flash is that it draws all the other light, so even in “well lite” area’s you get a much better image, for £20 this has got to be on the cheapest camera essentials you can get, I cant wait to take more photos and really see what its like.

Tonight was just about going out after dinner and seeing if it works and what we can do with it, Ive already started thinking of some cool things I can do. I really like the idea of shooting some fast movement stuff, like skateboards, boris bikes or even the occasional pet. for now though you’ll just have to check out these photos I got of Amy at 9:30 last night, she’s a good egg that one.

Heres the snaps, let me know what you think or if you have any tips for using the Flash, I want to up my low light photo game.

Thanks again amy for being my model!

B146 – what I like to photograph!

Not sure what to write about today, im literally struggling to keep my eyes open. its really early on Saturday morning, im two coffees and a large macdonalds coke down and still going. but it is a good day becuase im on my way to Norfolk for the Bank holiday weekend where im just going to eat and eat and eat.

My idea of the photos today was to take them on my journey to the station, see if I could make the one stop on the tube more exciting, it actually worked, I left a bit earlier so I could take photos but Im pretty happy with the result.

the good thing about doing this whole project is that its helping to me figure out what I like taking photos of, if its landscape or people or adventure. I think its hard to figure that out, with everything today like instagram and facebook, its so easy to take a good photo, but its hard to figure out what exactly you want to shoot. 5 months ago, I didnt really have an idea, I couldnt decide, I knew I like to take photos but I couldnt work out what my favourite thing to shoot was. I would just take hunderds of photos each day and see where I ended up. but not I really think about what im going to take a photo of, and ive realised that its people. I love taking photos of people. they are a hard thing to photograph, because a lot of people don’t want to have the photo taken, so its all about being quick and not drawing to much attention. A good tip that i’ve found works, is to set the shot up, wait for someone to walk into it and then take the snap, that way they think they’ve just walked into your shot, rather than you snapping them on purpose. simple and effective.

anyway heres my snaps from this morning!

B143 – BACK TO THE STREETS

Today I just wanted to go out and take photos of people, I havent done that for a long time and it was something I was determined todo. After finishing work at like 6ish, I headed to sainsburys grabbed a red bull and hit the street just to take some photos and chill out, it was one of those days where you are hoping for something good to happen, like the time I saw a man sun bathing on Shoreditch highstreet.

it was just one of those days where you have to wait and wait and wait for that photo opportunity, lucky enough a guy walks past holding and an umbrella and I think I managed to pull the shot off, you might also be able to see the guy furthest on the right giving him some weird look.

Street photography is something I really want to get better at, I really enjoy walking around and just taking photos of people, who are posing or doing anything. they’ve just switched off and going from A to B. Alot of it comes down to right place, right time, so I think Ive just got to carry on taking as many photos as possible and one day I might take that amazing photo! not sure about my writing skills though, i think thats a lost cause.

Anyway heres my snaps enjoy.

B138 – Would you?

A Few days I talked about colour street photography and how I though it was pretty hard, and that I wanted to give it a try. well last night I finished work and the sun was literally in the right place, so I headed out to brick lane and just walked around and took a few snaps before it got to dark.

I love brick lane you can walk down it and see so many weird things, but when you actually stop and look around you see 10 x the amount of weird things. Like a guy sitting down to eat food in a restaurant with face paint on but thats want adds to the atmosphere and make the place so perfect to photograph.

I think with street photography its about being in the right place at the right time, and with brick lane its literally always the right place and the right time. theres always some thing going on there thats photogenic, you’ve just got to find it.

On a different note, a few people have told me that I should get prints made of some of my best photos, would anyone else be interested in buying some? what do you all think? is any one out there interested?

B098 – Dusty Springfield’s £16.5m House!

Im writing this while listen to the legend that is Dusty Springfeild. I was over in Holland park the other day, when I came across one of those blue signs that said Dusty Springfeild, she live in London, I might sound stupid but I ever knew that, I also thought it would of been LA.

Her house is actually really cool but in an understated way, if you drove past it, theres nothing special and compared to all the other houses in that area, like the mansions that Guy Ritchie and the Beckenhams own, its not really that big but still has a pretty nice price tag of £16.5 million for the 7,200 square meter house, with a 35ft swimming pool and a gym.

When you actually stop and look its got a funky 60’s vibe, from the number on the door to the door its self and the windows all of it has that art deco feel. I suppose Ive got to up my photo game a lot before ill be able to afford this place!

Heres some other pictures aswell include a child falling off a scooter and…

B095 – Street Photography for the next 5 days

for the next 5 days Im going to concentrate on taking photos of people around London, its something that I’ve wanted todo for a long time and something I want to get better at.  Street photography is  big in London and probably to most popular type of photography around here, so I think its time I give it a proper try. At the moment, Im a big fan of black and white street photos I think they just add something else to the photo, so for now I’m probably going to concentrate on that, but well see where it ends up.

Heres some photos I took yesterday on my lunch break and after work having pizza in the park. have a look at ’em and tell me what you think.
