October 27th 2017, this is the day I’m going to talk about my time at Harvard University.
I had arrived at my hotel just outside Boston Massachusetts, when I had realised that I left my iphone cable in New York. On 20% battery and nothing to use as an alarm clock, I had no choice but to venture out of my hotel and try and find a iphone cable, something I felt is an easy thing to pick up. After driving 2 minutes down the road, I saw the bus which had a massive LED sign at the front which read “HARVARD”, a bit unsure Harvard was that close, I gave it a google and found out the campus was only 4 miles down the road, well one thing turn to the other and before I knew it I was following the bus to the world famous collage of Harvard, so thank you bus driver for getting me to Harvard, with out you I would never of known.
After arriving at Harvard campus, I quickly realised that I was probably one of the more stupider people in my vicinity, and from going out to get an iPhone cable to standing on the famous steps of the Widener Library, where 8 of the american presidents and some of the worlds smartest people have been to get their books, was a pretty cool story . Mr Joshua Frederick Stephen Spear, current location: Harvard, that sound pretty cool. Ive even brought a Harvard T-shirt, so now I look like an international student.
My favourite part of this whole mini late night adventure was coming across this guy outside the main campus, dressed all in orange screaming about rhinos and Donald Trump, I couldn’t work out if he was for Trump of Against Trump or passionate about rhinos. The only thing I managed to get from the whole thing was “stand up to his orangeness, he needs you, the world will end”. He also kept blowing raspberries. so many be he had a few opinions he wanted to get across. If you want to try and figure out what was going on check out the video Ive posted on my instagram – joshfspear. and please if you figure out what his point was, I would love to know. or if you know this guy even better!
this morning a lot of time was spent filming down town, which meant we got to see what life is like in proper Downtown. and to be honest on a Sunday its pretty quite. aperently Goldboro is in the Bible belt, which means strict religious rules, like church on Sundays, no alcohol and all shops are shut. That basically meant we had the town to ourselfs, which was actaully pretty weird, the only other people there were the curious locals watching us, or the one lady who came up and asked “what is that?” while pointing to the camera…
North Carolina has been a tough few days and tomorrow we leave for the next destination, im looking forward to eating some organic food. its tough eating processed food all the time. one question I have for anyone reading this for the south, why are you using polystyrene plates and cutlery to eat? that stuff is bad for the environment and must cost you a fortune! some people east every meal off of polystyrene? why?
I dont want to moan but that is a crazy amount of extra waste, just use china like the rest of us and wash up after. trust me its not that much more time consuming and means you can re-use your plates. I will happily send anyone a link to cheap cutlery if you need help finding it. 70 polystyrene plates are $18, now that will last 2 people a month, or you could by 6 china plates for $30 and they will easily last you a year. and thats 3 each.
on a lighter topic, today I saw my first proper american motor cycle gang unspoken sons, at first they scared the hell out of people and one of them even looked like he was going to kill me or something, the president even introduced himself as Nasty, which didn’t make me to confident but after a quick google this evening I realised that they are actually a massive support of Children’s charities. so I think I’m pretty safe.
Last night I was in that situation were I need to take three photos but all im doing is going to Sainsburys to buy a wok and some rice noddles. Lucky amy was doing the double demin look, apparently thats were you wear a denim top and jeans. So I asked her really nicely if she would let me take some portrait snaps.
I watch that documentary on the photographer Platoon the other day, and it got me all rev’d up to put some energy into portrait photography. if you haven’t seen it head over to Netflix and watch the series called Abstract its unbelievable. its basically about this guy called Platoon, who takes portrait photos of some of the worlds most influential people, including the legend Barack Obama and the Russian dude Putin but its more about his style of photographs, give it a watch I promise you wont be disappointed.
Any way, yea I took some cool photos of Amy last night on the way to Sainsbury’s, but if theres anyone else out there who wouldnt mind me practising my photo skillz on them, let me know. I want to get better at it!
